1996s Haarlem Cup Squad

Haarlam Cup 2007 - 1996s Tour Summary

The 2007 Haarlem Cup was a resounding success for the 1996 squad, both on and off the park. Most importantly, all of the players made great progress in their football development and bonded together well as a team. The spirit which was developed over the week will stand them in good stead when they return to their 'bread and butter' in the Fife Sevens in the next month.

There were many footballing highlights, from excellent performances against much larger players from the Amsterdam side, Oost Watersgraafsmeer, to a thrilling 2-1 loss to RKK DEM, the Dutch side which eventually won the A-final of the tournament. All of the boys played their part and came away from the week knowing that they had given their all against some high quality opposition.

Beyond the football, the squad and their parents had a fantastic time, from our base at Zandvoort on the Dutch North Sea coast. We had many trips to the beach, where most of the party enjoyed a dip in the North Sea, as well as impromptu football matches on the sand. Another highlight was the visit to the Amsterdam Arena, home of Ajax. After a stadium tour, the squad were allowed a practice match on the first-team's training pitches, directly beside the main stadium, before buying their way through the Ajax club shop. With regular sessions of tennis, table tennis, squash, bowling and crazy golf, parents and kids were never short of things to do when they were not playing or preparing for the football.

The whole trip was organised by Gary Wilkinson and all of our arrangements went smoothly throughout. All the parents played their part in maintaining a fun, inclusive atmosphere, which ensured that all of the kids got the most from the trip in every sense. It was a memorable week, and one which everyone will recall as a highlight of their time at the Norries, and just a wonderful football experience. The squad were a credit to the Norries, with their football, attitude and exemplary behaviour throughout. Well done to all!
